Animation Process

I used a series of photos taken in my room of my hand and a plush I  used to represent mu bunny plush character. By taking a series of images, I then had the frames for my animation and could begin drawing it out digitally. By using layers on photoshop, I was able to create a sketch effect on top of the original image, giving it an illustrated and sketch book like effect.

As you can see, these frames are exactly alike, apart from one is done in a sketchy style digitally, this reminds me of manga or the raw sketches of an anime before being put into production. I did this with nearly 100 frames, creating the intro and the outro last minute.

As I didn’t get the opportunity to add colour into my animation, I am experimenting with different types or styles of colouring and seeing which one would work best with the animation. I will be using the frames I already used into my animation to experiment. Each frame will be a different colouring style, this is to show how different colouring techniques can create different emotions.

Final Animation

masterdocument.gif

This is my final animation. Over 100 frames put into a 5 second GIF. I used Photoshop with a 12 pixel wide stroke with a 10% smoothness, this helped to create the sketchy inked style of the whole animation. The way it moves almost radically helps with the uneasy feeling and motion of the concept of abandonment, how the journey is full of bumps and turns and never feels right or stable. The writing was supposed to represent a childs handwriting, soft, curved and slanted. This animation took me nearly three weeks, without all the research and planning. I felt the Macs held me back as it was very hard and rare to find one that works with the tablet and the programmes work without crashing every second. As you can tell. I have had to cut my animation short, this is because realised I would not have enough time to do the complex ending if I wanted to get the deadline. As such I left it as a “To be continued” which also fits in with the theme of Abandonment, as the viewers were abandoned of an ending.

Flipbook Animation

John Barnes Linnett
Another moving image invention was the praxinoscope, invented in 1877 by Charles-Émile Reynaud. It was similar to a zoetrope, but used mirrors to simplify the viewing process. The first flipbook appeared in 1868 when it was patented by John Barnes Linnett under the name kineograph (Latin for “moving picture”).

History Of Animation

3,000 BC – Sharhr-E Sukhteh, born in Iran, created a Bronze Age pottery bowl depicts goats leaping.

1603 – Magic Lantern is an image projector using pictures on sheets of glass. Since some sheets contain moving parts, it is considered the first example of projected animation.

1900 – 1930 – The Silent Era. The early 20th century marks the beginning of theatrical showings of cartoons, especially in the United States and France. Many animators form studios, with Bray Studios in New York proving the most successful of this era. Bray helped launch the careers of the cartoonists that created Mighty Mouse, Betty Boop, and Woody Woodpecker.

1980 – 2014 – Modern American Era. The CGI (computer generated imagery) revolutionized animation. A principal difference of CGI animation compared to traditional animation is that drawing is replaced by 3D modeling, almost like a virtual version of stop-motion. A form of animation that combines the two and uses 2D computer drawing can be considered computer aided animation.

“For me illustration is a world full of endless possibilities and creativity. It is amazing how one can tell a story by means of illustrations. It allows me to create something which embodies what I feel, dream and imagine. I find inspiration from my dreams, childhood memories, and feelings towards the things that are happening around me. I also find inspiration from the people I hold dear.”

“I always loved colorful and dreamy things so I try to color my illustrations with playful candy colors such as pink and pastels or dark candy hues depending on what feeling or effect that I want to achieve. Also, I like to put random glows/illumination when I feel it’s too dark or dull looking. My subjects are mostly female children with expressive eyes (because I think emotions are clearly seen in the eyes). Each illustration I make is a product of my dreams, memories imagination or feelings so it’s like a free flow of ideas and concepts. I’ m still trying to find more ways to improve my illustrations though.”

Cartoon Network

For many of us, Cartoon network holds a special place in our hearts and memories. There is not a single person out there who could say they hate this channel and studio. Each one of their shows were vastly different in style, animation technique, maturity, concept and humor. Each show also had different voice actors, all being extremely talented and this made the shows so great. Some of us may not remember the plot or even the character names, however everyone remembers those iconic character voices. Such as: Scooby Too, Ben 10, Bugs Bunny and Brain.

Throughout the years, Cartoon Network has changed drastically. This is mainly due to the new people that they have hired. A lot of the shows look and sadly sold the same and it seems that the creators of these shows are getting lazy or even just throwing out content for the sake of making quick money. Even though this may be the case, this generation has such a deep seated nostalgia for these shows that the respect and love it still there. However. most do hope for the return of old creators and voice actors.
